{Why Stairway Designs Are More Than Just Functional
Stairs are more than just a way of moving between levels; they are a important part of a building’s architecture. With so many types to choose from, staircases can be tailored to meet the needs and styles of any space. Whether you’re looking for a space-saving solution or a dramatic statement piece, there’s a staircase design to meet any requirement.
{U-Shaped Stairs: Perfect for Spacious Interiors
A U-shaped stair includes two flights that run in line, connected by a landing that makes a half-turn. This style is often found in grand homes or public spaces with ample vertical room. Despite their grand look, U-shaped stairs have a space-saving design that maximises space. The central landing is both useful and design, offering opportunities for creative design. This design is connected to elegance and is a favoured choice in high-end or classic homes.
{Why Curved Staircases Are a Statement Feature
Curved stairway designs are defined by their smooth lines that create a graceful, arching motion. With a softer curve, these stairs are more user-friendly than Spiral designs. Curved stairway designs are commonly seen in luxurious homes, historic structures, or upscale hotels as a design feature. Building Curved stairs is a labour-intensive process that typically results in a higher cost. The final product is a magnificent structural feature that adds sophistication to any environment.
{Floating Stairs: A Stylish Style
Floating staircases are known for their sleek, simple appearance, with treads that appear to float. These staircases are designed with hidden supports or wall attachments, giving them a clean, suspended look. This design is often used in modern interiors to create a sense of openness. The absence of obtrusive supports ensures that other elements, such as artwork, can stand out. While visually striking, Floating stairway designs require expert engineering to ensure safety.
{Spiral Stairs: Great for Studios Spaces
Spiral staircases are a compact and eye-catching option, characterised by a supporting column around which the steps wind in a circular pattern. These staircases are ideal for tight spots, like small apartments, where traditional designs won’t work. Materials like wood are typically used, giving Spiral staircases a adaptable look. While they are compact, they can be more challenging to climb, especially for those with mobility issues. Despite their challenges, Spiral staircases are loved for their artistic and stunning design.
{Bifurcated Staircases: A Masterpiece in Design
Bifurcated stairway designs are defined by their impressive, balanced design, often found in public spaces. The design of Bifurcated staircases involves a central flight that splits into two at a landing, typically curving in contrasting angles. This style is known for its imposing and impressive presence, often chosen for formal settings. The layout provides a symmetrical and balanced aesthetic, often enhanced with decorative balustrades or chandeliers. While they require significant space and investment, Bifurcated stairway designs are a classic symbol of elegance.
{The Enduring Appeal of Stairs
Staircases are a strong reminder of how construction can combine practicality with aesthetic expression. With styles ranging from modern and modern to classic and traditional, staircases offer countless potential for customisation. No matter the time period, stairs will continue to be a defining feature of how we experience and enjoy spaces.
Newcastle Council tackles dangerous staircases
More than 3,000 homes and 57 blocks of flats with potentially dangerous staircases have been identified by Newcastle City Council.
The ‘Ranch’ style staircase design, which features horizontal guarding, is classified as a category one hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.
Concerns about the staircases were raised last year, with residents warning that children use them as ladders or try to climb between the horizontal boarding.
